Working For A Nuclear Free City - Businessmen & Ghosts

Here is another band from the UK that I am excited about making their US debut. Working For A Nuclear Free City really turned my head earlier this year when I heard their Rocket EP and really left me wanting more from the band. Well, looks like they have loads more to offer, as their debut US release will be a 2 CD set.

The debut album, Businessmen & Ghosts is due out November 13th on Deaf Dumb & Blind Recordings and the US version has some exclusive goodies on it. In addition to the new album, we here in the states will get WFANFC's debut UK album, the Rocket EP and some additional bonus tracks as well.

These guys from Manchester began as a studio project of brothers Phil and John Kay and school friend Gary McLure in 2001. At the start, the guys stuck mostly with instrumental tunes, and those are still present on their current Chaturbate recordings. However it may have been the addition of bassist Ed McLure to the mix, who introduced dance beats and vocals to the tracks, that really pushed them over the edge.

Enjoy this sample from the new album, this one coming from the Businessmen CD titled, "Troubled Son."

Midpoint To Get A City Beat Makeover

Exciting news here in Cincinnati as the announcement has come down that City Beat will be taking the reigns of the Midpoint Music Festival. As a big fan of local music, Cincinnati and City Beat, this seems like the perfect fit to take Midpoint to the next level.

I wrote a lengthy article last fall about Midpoint, the gist of which was that I loved the idea of our very own music festival to celebrate the city, great jasmin live music and our culture in general. I mostly complained though, about how I felt it was digressing every year and had mostly lost the plot. Now, I'm pretty certain nobody at Citybeat is using that post with these changes in mind. But I am excited that some of the things could happen.

Midpoint will be better this year, and the overall future of Midpoint is suddenly on the upswing and will take place on September 25-27.

Without giving away information that I probably should keep to myself, I do know that Midpoint will be bringing in some national headliners for the event this year, and will probably utilize a very different geographical landscape here in town rather than just OTR.

I'm hoping for some regional label showcases, and as always, some great local and regional bands, both signed and unsigned, which will also be new territory for Midpoint.

Also, the fun starts early this year with a launch party on April 9th at Below Zero with Cursive performing.

British Sea Power

I have been waiting patiently for some new material from British Sea Power for some time now and got the news last weekbsp1.jpg that the band will be releasing a new EP, titled Krankenhaus? on October 9th here in the states. The EP is titled after the German word for hospital and will be the first release from the band since their 2005 release, Open Season.

The band are also getting ready to hit U.S. shores for a fall tour, starting in mid October at Maxwell's in New Jersey. All tour dates after the jump. Also check out this new song from the upcoming EP.

Washington Park Music Festival Preview

This Saturday should be a great day of music at Washington Park as a great lineup of local bands will be playing an afternoon jasminelive party right in the heart of our city across from Music Hall. Today I thought it would be fun to focus in a bit on the bands playing the festival just so you can get a taste of what Saturday should be like. Check out the details below and make sure you hit up the Washington Park Music Festival this Saturday afternoon!

Bad Veins - Ben and Sebastian are the two guys that make up Bad Veins and they are no stranger to our humble site badveins1.jpg here. We first gave our readers the news about these guys about a year ago and lots of great stuff has happened for the guys since. In addition to playing twice in the lounge, Bad Veins have opened for the likes of Silversun Pickups, Apples in Stereo, Viva Voce, Snowden and have also impressed on two trips to New York City. It will not be long until you see a wise label snatch these guys up.

Bad Veins - Gold & Warm

Pearlene - Truly one of the best kept secrets here in Cincinnati is Pearlene and their live show. The band really brings a pearlene.jpg great mix of blues and garage rock to the stage that has become more and more consistent over time. Their latest album, For Western Violence and Brief Sensuality, should be a part of every Cincy music fans collection

Travels release new album

Travels are a duo out of the Boston area comprised of two members of other indie bands you may have heard of before. Mona Elliott and Anar Badalov have also been a part of Victory at Sea and Metal Hearts, respectively. You may recall a writeup we did on them some time ago as well. The new album sounds great so far and I think you will really enjoy the song below for download.

The album will be self-released on October 30th and we always love to promote some true independent music so sample these tunes and then head over to their myspace to stay on top of things leading up to the release next month.
