My Photo:
I always get emotional when I see kids everywhere working at an early age in order for them to survive or to be able to help their parents at an early age. When I see kids like that, I always tell to myself that I am fortunate enough that my parents sent me to one of the best schools in Cebu while these kids have to work for them to be able to buy something for themselves or for them to have something for themselves when they go at the school. This shot was taken in Siquijor. I salute these kids in the picture because they’re very hardworking and they start fishing using this small bangka at an early age. Seeing them being able to catch several tiny fishes and 1 squid makes them already happy because that would mean that they’ve got something to eat for dinner and to share with their entire family. It made me remember that these kids waited for us infront of our cottage and displayed the different shells they had. When we bought all their shells, that same day, they came back to us with big smiles and told us that they were thankful because they’re able to buy a simple pair of slippers. It’s touching and the feeling is undescribable seeing them smiling that way and how content they are with their simple life.

That is a very moving wordless Wednesday. I see children on the streets here in Jakarta and it is always upsetting. It reminds me to be grateful for all we have.

I am against forced labor in children, but children working to help out the family is a great experience and makes for loving, supportive, hard working adults. They do not look sad, they look happy and proud to help their family. Super kids!
I wish we could encourage more of that in the United States.

I did you did a great thing buying all their shells. It’s far much better than give those poor kids money when beg only. I can and do regulary, when in poorer countries, buy something from kids selling small things like chewing gums, hand-made post cards etc. We also have shared our meals with locals when in the Andes. They are very grateful, and allways gives something back.
Great post. Thanks for sharing

It’s heartbreaking to think of what so many children are going through, and going without, in the world today, but I agree with the other commenters that said it’s good to see them taking pride in what they’re doing for themselves and their families. It just makes me think that some people don’t know how good they’ve got it. And that’s a shame. Thanks for such a poignant WW.

This photo reminds me of those poor kids in our town too. They worked at a young age because their parents can’t supply their needs. You know what, if God will bless me financially, I would love to help those poor kids in our place. Nakakaawa sila. I always have a heart for the poor kids.
